I should also note that Facebook claims I have malware regardless of computer or browser (including Mac OS X and Lubuntu), except Windows 10 is the only platform where I have been forced to download their program and suffered as a result. I don’t know if that was the right thing to do, but it was after the deletion of that directory that I could get back into my account (albeit one that no longer allows me to post links). Kaspersky also never appeared in my list of installed programs, though I found it inside the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Temp\FBScanner_331840299 directory and removed it.

A system restore was impossible, as Windows 10 ironically claimed that I had an antivirus running-and having restored before without issue, I don’t think McAfee was the culprit. Malware Bytes was able to restore my access to McAfee, though even now, despite having regained access to my Facebook account, I still get regular notifications saying my antivirus is turned off. But to be on the safe side I removed them anyway. Malware Bytes and McAfee’s Getsusp tool both consider my computer to be clean the former picked up some PUPs, which I already knew about (they weren’t malicious). (If you would like any background, I blogged about the 16 hours here.)

However, it might as well have been the scam, because not only does the scan not finish (although it sends Facebook a notification that it has), on a reboot it knocked out my McAfee antivirus, and it would not let me switch it back on. This is the legitimate version, not the scam that has been going around. Hi there: during the small hours of the 2nd, Facebook claimed that my computer was infected with malware and that I had to download their version of Kaspersky and let it run before I could access my account.
